Jacket means a cavity / gap in between valve body shell thickness and jacket material shell thickness, which allows to flow / pass a media like Hot Oil, Hot Water, Steam, Cold Water etc from the cavity / gap to get continuous trouble free flow in pipe line. At the time of designing a Jacket sufficient gap is must required to complete a circular route of jacket passing flow media, which passing through jacket cavity. In all types of jacketed valve generally one inlet connection provided for entering a media, second for outlet of the same and third as drain connection. Drain connection is not in a standard practice but it can be on request and requirement.
Few words of above question says answer itself. The valves body which have surrounding Jacket, it is called by the name of Jacketed Valve. Jacket can be a Fabricated (welded) from outside body or Integral casting with valve body. Depends on possibility of castings decide to go with fabricated or casted version Jacketed Valve. Various types of Jacketed Valve manufacture and it use depends on flow media, pressure, temperature, performance and operation of valve.
Mostly two types of Jacket use in chemical, pharma, food, petrochemical, fertilizers, viscous, sulfur, bitumen, asphalt, viscous and general process industries.
1. Hot Jacket (Fabricated /Welded with valve body or Integral Casted with valve body) — Hot media passing through jacket cavity
2. Cold Jacket (Fabricated /Welded with valve body or Integral Casted with valve body) — Cold media passing through jacket cavity
3. Heat Jacket — Heat apply by electric coil direct on valve body without any jacket on valve. (Not in a standard practice & advisable)
As two types of jackets are standard same flow media is also two types.
1. Hot Media — Hot Oil, Hot Water, Steam
2. Cold Media — Cold Water / Chilled Water
Hot Jacketed valves being use to prevent solidification of process media in a pipe line and we know better once media jam in a pipe line and stuck up, it is very difficult to re-continue the process system. So where media solidify on room / lower temperature, base on minimum heating temperature requirement jacket media being select and pass through cavity of jacket to meet trouble operation of plant which practical not possible in ordinary standard two way valve.
Cold Jacketed valves being use to control and maintain temperature of process media. Where the process media temperature affect the total system and process of plant, there to prevent upper maximum limit of temperature cold jacket use which recirculate cold water continuous still the plant in operation which is not possible in standard valve.
Base on suitability of flow media valve body being select, various types of jacketed valves body materials are as per below:
For casted version jacket material as same body material various option and for fabricated as list below:
Various types of tailor made jacketed valves can be and it's selection depends on type of flow media, working pressure and working temperature. Some example of jacketed valves are as list below:
