The Difference Between Gate Valve and Globe Valve


There are many types of valves, such as globe valve, gate valve, butterfly valve, check valve, ball valve and etc. All these valves are indispensable components in piping systems. Each kind of valve differs in appearance, structure and usage. However, globe valve and gate valve look similar, and also have the same function of cutting off the flow. Some people who don’t know much about valves are easily to confuse them. Actually, there are many differences between them.
 
Structure
If the space for installation is limited, you shall select the suitable one. The gate valve can be tightly closed by the medium pressure and tightly closed to achieve a non-leakage effect. When opening and closing, the sealing surface of the valve core and the valve seat always contact and rub against each other, so the sealing surface is easy to wear, and when the gate valve is close to close, the pressure difference between the front and the rear of the pipeline is large, and the sealing surface wear is more serious.
 The structure of  gate valve is more complicated than  globe valve. For the same size, gate valve is higher, but globe valve is longer. In addition, gate valve has rising stem and non-rising stem, but globe valve doesn’t have.
 
Working Principle
When globe valve is opened and closed, its hand wheel rotates and lifts together with valve stem. While, the situation is different for gate valve. When the stem of gate valve is lift, the position of hand wheel is unchanged. Gate valve will be required full open or full close due to different flow rates, while globe valve is not required. Globe valve has the specified inlet and outlet, while gate valve doesn’t.
In addition, the gate valve has only two states of full opening or full closing, the stroke of the shutter opening and closing is large, and the opening and closing time is long. The valve plate movement stroke of the shut-off valve is much smaller, and the valve plate of the shut-off valve can be stopped at a certain position during the movement for flow adjustment. The gate valve can only be used for truncation and has no other functions.
 
 
Performance 
Globe valve can be used to cut and control flow. The fluid resistance for globe valve is relatively large, and it is laborious to open and close. But globe valve has short opening and closing stroke, due to the short distance between plug and sealing surface.
Gate valve can only be fully open or fully closed. When it is fully open, the flow resistance inside is almost none, and it is easy to close. But the distance between disc and sealing surface is long, so it takes longer time.
 
 
Installation
Gate valve can be installed in either direction, since it is bi-directional. But globe valve must be installed in accordance with the arrow on valve body. There is also a clear provision for the installation of globe valve in China. That is the flow for globe valve is always from top to bottom.
The inside passage of globe valve is not on a horizontal line, which can be obviously seen from the outside. While, the inside passage of gate valve is on a horizontal line. The stroke of gate valve is larger than that of globe valve.
Regarding to the flow resistance, it is small in gate valve, but large in globe valve, when fully open. The flow resistance coefficient of the ordinary gate valve is about 0.08~0.12, and the valve is easy to open or close.  Medium can flow in either direction. The flow resistance of ordinary globe valve is 3-5 times that of gate valve. It is not easy to open or close.The plug of globe valve will only touch the sealing surface when it is completely closed, so the wear on sealing surface is very small. But for gate valve, its disc always contacts the sealing surface. It is easy to wear the seal surfface during operation.When gate valve is near to be fully closed, the pressure differential is big and the wearness is the most serious.
 
Sealing
The sealing surface of globe valve is a small trapezoidal side of plug. Once the plug is detached, the valve is closed.(if the pressure differential is large, the valve can’t be completely sealed). Gate valve seals by the side surface of disc, and sealing performance is not as good as globe valve.
