3. Heat Treatment

  1. All castings shall receive a heat treatment proper to their design and chemical composition.
  2. ASTM A217 castings shall be furnished in the normalized and tempered conditions; Grades WC1, WC4, WC5, WC6, and CA15 shall be tempered at 1100°F [595°C] min; Grades WC9, C5, C12, and WC11 shall be tempered at 1250°F [675°C] min; Grade C12A shall be thermally treated, either by normalizingand-tempering or by accelerated cooling from the austenitizing temperature by air blasting or liquid quenching, followed by tempering. C12A castings shall be austenitized at 1900-1975°F [1040-1080°C] and tempered at 1350-1470°F [730-800°C].
  3. Heat treatment shall be performed after castings have been allowed to cool below the transformation range.

4. Quality Control

  1. The surface of ASTM A217 castings (either valve, flange, fittings or other piping component) shall be visually examined and shall be free of sand, scale, cracks, and hot tears.
  2. Hollow castings of Grade C12A, larger than NPS 4 [DN 100], and whose internal surfaces are not accessible to the visual examination above-mentioned, shall be examined by the ultrasonic examination prescribed in Supplementary Requirement S7.
5. What is the temperature application to WC6 and WC9 castings respectively?

The suitable working temperature of WC6 is -29 ~ 540 °C, and the suitable working temperature of WC9 is -29 ~ 570 °C.

Both specifications are chrome-molybdenum steel, and the mechanical properties of the two are basically the same, with the same tensile strength, yield strength and elongation at room temperature.
The Cr-Mo high temperature cast steel used for the valve mainly adopts WC6, WC9 and C5 (ZG1Cr5Mo) in the ASTM A217 standard, and the corresponding rolled materials are F11, F22 and F5 in ASTM A182, respectively.
Low chromium grade chromium-molybdenum steel Low chromium grade chromium-molybdenum steels are available in WC6, WC9, F11 and F22. The suitable working medium is water, steam and hydrogen. It is not suitable for sulfur-containing oils. WC6 and F11 are suitable for -29-540 °C, and WC9 and F22 are suitable for -29-570 °C.
Chromium five molybdenum high temperature steel Chromium five molybdenum high temperature steel has C5 (ZG1Cr5Mo) and F5, and its applicable working medium is water, steam, hydrogen and sulfur oil. C5 (ZG1Cr5Mo), if used for water vapor, has a maximum operating temperature of 600 °C. When used in working media such as sulfur-containing oils, the maximum operating temperature is 550 °C. Therefore, the operating temperature of C5 (ZG1Cr5Mo) is specified to be ≤550 °C.
